The Elegant Tern: A Graceful Guest on Costa Rica’s Coasts

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Elegant Tern: A Graceful Guest on Costa Rica’s Coasts

While our mountain retreat offers stunning views and abundant wildlife, Costa Rica’s beauty extends far beyond the cloud forests. Today, we set our sights on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts to discover the Elegant Tern, a majestic seabird gracing our shores.

A Coastal Gem

The Elegant Tern (Thalasseus elegans) is a medium-sized tern, easily identified by its sleek build, long, pointed wings, and a striking orange bill that resembles a stiletto. During breeding season, a shaggy black crest adds a touch of drama to their appearance. Unlike many terns, they lack the classic “black cap” on their heads, opting for a chic, pale grey upper body that contrasts beautifully with their snowy white underparts.

Masters of the Hunt

These aerial acrobats are awe-inspiring to watch. Soaring effortlessly on thermals with their long wings, they scan the ocean depths with sharp eyes. Once they spot a target, typically small fish like anchovies, they plunge into the water with a graceful dive. Their success rate is impressive, thanks to their sharp eyesight and maneuverability.

Elegant Visitors

While not permanent residents of Costa Rica, Elegant Terns grace our Pacific and Caribbean coasts during the winter months, migrating from their breeding grounds in Mexico and the southern United States. They typically arrive in September and remain until April, making them a seasonal delight for birdwatchers.

Elegant, Yet Vulnerable

Despite their name, these terns face challenges. Their breeding success relies heavily on the abundance of anchovies. Fluctuations in fish populations can significantly impact their nesting success. Additionally, habitat loss due to coastal development poses a threat to their nesting colonies.

Witnessing Elegance

If you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica’s coasts during the winter months, keep an eye out for these graceful birds. Some prime locations for spotting Elegant Terns include:

  • The Gulf of Nicoya
  • Marino Ballena National Park
  • Carara National Park (Pacific Coast)
  • Tortuguero National Park (Caribbean Coast)

Birding tours are a fantastic way to learn more about these fascinating creatures and ensure responsible birdwatching practices.

The Elegant Tern: A Coastal Treasure

The Elegant Tern is a captivating visitor to Costa Rica’s shores. Their graceful movements, striking appearance, and vital role in the marine ecosystem make them a true treasure. By appreciating these elegant birds and protecting their habitat, we can ensure they continue to grace our coasts for generations to come.

So, next time you find yourself on the Costa Rican coast, take a moment to scan the horizon. You might just be rewarded with a glimpse of the Elegant Tern, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that lies beyond the mountains.
