A Misleading Moniker
Despite its name, the Nashville warbler has no real connection to Nashville, Tennessee. It was actually ornithologist Alexander Wilson who first encountered the bird near Nashville in 1811, mistaking it for a local resident. This little warbler is actually much more widespread, breeding in parts of northern and western North America and southern Canada before migrating south for the winter. Luckily for us, Costa Rica falls right along their preferred wintering route!
A Bird Full of Personality
The Nashville warbler is a tiny ball of energy, flitting about the middle and outer branches of trees, particularly in shrubby areas and second-growth forests. These are precisely the kinds of habitats that abound in our mountain retreat! Watch for the Nashville warbler as it meticulously searches for insects amongst the leaves, its short tail pumping constantly. They’re quite the acrobats, often teetering on the very tips of branches as they glean their next meal.
Spotting a Splash of Sunshine
The Nashville warbler is a visual treat. While small, its plumage packs a punch. Look for a bird with a bright yellow underbelly that extends up its throat and breast. This sunny yellow is contrasted by a cool, olive-green back and a distinctive gray head. A bright white eyering completes the picture, making those big, black eyes absolutely pop. Females and immature Nashville warblers are slightly duller, with less yellow on the underparts and a browner head, but their overall look is quite similar to the males.
