A Flash of Green: The Olive-throated Parakeet

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Green: The Olive-throated Parakeet

Here at the retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the Costa Rican mountains, we wake each day to a symphony of birdsong. Today, let’s turn our attention to a vibrant resident flitting through the trees: the Olive-throated Parakeet.

These little bundles of joy, also known as Olive-throated Conures in the aviculture world, are a common sight in Costa Rica’s tropical lowlands. If you keep your eyes peeled during your walks around the retreat, you might catch a glimpse of them zipping through the forest canopy in small flocks, their wings flashing green against the sunlight.

A Tiny Jewel of the Rainforest

The Olive-throated Parakeet is a relatively small parrot, typically measuring between 8.7 and 10 inches in length. Despite their compact size, they boast an impressive wingspan, allowing for agile maneuvers through the dense foliage.

Their plumage is a captivating combination of colors. The head and upper body are adorned with a rich, dark green, like freshly cut emeralds. A hint of sunshine peeks through with yellowish ear-coverts and a bright rump. Look closely, and you’ll notice a bare patch of white skin surrounding their eyes, adding a touch of personality.

As their name suggests, the throat and upper breast are bathed in a beautiful olive-brown hue, transitioning to a lighter olive on the belly and vent. This subtle color variation adds depth and dimension to their overall appearance.

A Life on the Move

Olive-throated Parakeets are social creatures, rarely seen alone. They prefer to flit about in groups of up to 30 birds, their movements a mesmerizing dance through the treetops. Imagine a swirling vortex of emerald, their wings beating in unison as they twist and turn with playful abandon.

These energetic birds are primarily found in semi-open areas with scattered trees, woodlands, and even on the outskirts of towns and suburban areas. So, you might encounter them not just during your explorations in the rainforest but also while relaxing on the retreat’s balcony, enjoying a cup of Costa Rican coffee.

A Taste for the Tropics

The Olive-throated Parakeet is an omnivore, with a diet that reflects the abundance of the tropics. They favor a variety of seeds, fruits, legumes, leaves, and even flowers. Keen observers might spot them feasting on seeds in the trees or raiding cornfields, their sharp beaks perfectly adapted for extracting their favorite treats.

Their playful nature extends to their feeding habits. Watching them forage in a group is a delightful sight, filled with squawks and chirps as they share the bounty of the rainforest.

A Species in Need of Our Care

The Olive-throated Parakeet is currently classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN. Habitat loss and the illegal pet trade are the primary threats to their populations. Here at the retreat, we are committed to sustainable practices that protect the biodiversity of the rainforest, ensuring that these emerald jewels continue to grace our mornings with their vibrant presence.

So, the next time you’re at the retreat, keep an eye out for a flash of green flitting through the trees. With a little patience and a keen eye, you might just be rewarded with a sighting of the Olive-throated Parakeet, a tiny ambassador of the Costa Rican rainforest.
