A Flash of Crimson: The Red-rumped Woodpecker in the Costa Rican Highlands

Our mountain retreat here in Costa Rica offers not only breathtaking vistas and rejuvenating tranquility, but also the opportunity to witness a stunning array of birdlife. Today, we turn our gaze to a vibrant resident of the highlands, the aptly named Red-rumped Woodpecker (Veniliornis kirkii).

A Drab Delight

At first glance, the Red-rumped Woodpecker might appear on the unassuming side. Smaller than its flashier woodpecker cousins, this bird measures a mere 15-16 cm (5.9-6.3 inches) and sports a plumage of olive-brown above, with subtle yellow and red tinges. Look closer, however, and you’ll discover a symphony of subtle colors. Their underparts are barred with delicate stripes of brown and white, and their faces are adorned with charming whitish streaks against an olive-brown background.

A Splash of Scarlet

The true star of the show, though, is undoubtedly the bird’s namesake – the red rump. This crimson patch on the lower back and uppertail coverts adds a vibrant pop of color, making the Red-rumped Woodpecker a delightful surprise amidst the mountain greenery.

Spotting a Red-Rumped Beauty

These little dynamos are most active during the day, flitting from branch to branch in search of sustenance. They favor a variety of habitats, from the lush rainforests of the lowlands to, you guessed it, the mountain forests where our retreat is nestled. So, keep your eyes peeled as you explore the trails or relax on your balcony – you might just catch a glimpse of this feathered wonder.

Listen Up!

While the Red-rumped Woodpecker isn’t known for a particularly elaborate song, it does possess a distinct drumming call. Listen for a rapid series of sharp taps echoing through the trees – that might be your cue to look for a flash of red amongst the foliage.

A Forest Drummer

Like all woodpeckers, the Red-rumped plays a vital role in the forest ecosystem. Their sharp beaks are perfectly adapted for excavating insects hidden beneath the bark of trees. This not only provides them with a tasty meal but also helps to control insect populations that could otherwise harm the trees.

A Feathered Friend

The Red-rumped Woodpecker is a delightful resident of the Costa Rican highlands. With its subtle charm and vibrant splash of color, this little drummer is sure to add a touch of magic to your birding experience at our mountain retreat. So grab your binoculars, keep your ears open, and get ready to be enchanted by this special Costa Rican bird!
