The Unspotted Saw-whet Owl: A Tiny Hunter in the Cloud Forests

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Unspotted Saw-whet Owl: A Tiny Hunter in the Cloud Forests

Here at our mountain retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of Costa Rican cloud forests, the symphony of birdsong is a constant companion. But among the chorus of familiar melodies, there exists a subtler tune, a whisper on the wind – the call of the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl.

This diminutive denizen of the highlands is a true wonder. Measuring just 7-8 inches tall, it’s one of the smallest owl species in Central America. Unlike its spotted cousins, the Unspotted Saw-whet lives up to its name, sporting a cloak of rich sepia brown on its upperparts, throat, and upper breast. The lower breast and belly offer a delightful contrast in warm cinnamon buff, making it appear almost two-toned in the dappled forest light.

Its facial disc, framed by a narrow white border, holds large, piercing yellow eyes that seem to pierce the twilight. Tiny white “eyebrows” and a whitish chin complete this expressive visage.

But don’t be fooled by its cute appearance. The Unspotted Saw-whet Owl is a fierce nocturnal predator. Come nightfall, it emerges from its daytime roost – often an abandoned woodpecker hole – to silently hunt insects, small lizards, and even rodents. Its sharp beak and powerful talons make it a master of the night, adept at catching prey unaware.

While not as common as some other Costa Rican birds, the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl can be encountered in the higher elevations of our mountain range, particularly in areas with paramo and elfin forests. These cloud-kissed ecosystems, with their stunted trees and dense vegetation, provide the perfect habitat for this elusive hunter.

Hearing its haunting call – a series of evenly spaced whistles or a cat-like meow – echoing through the stillness of the night is a truly magical experience. It’s a reminder that even in the quiet corners of the forest, life thrives in fascinating forms.

Tips for spotting the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl:

  • Nighttime is Key: As nocturnal birds, your best chance of encountering an Unspotted Saw-whet Owl is after dusk.
  • Listen for the Call: Keep your ears peeled for the owl’s distinctive whistles or meows.
  • Seek Higher Elevations: Head towards the cloud forests in the mountains for a better chance of spotting this elusive bird.
  • Guided Night Tours: Consider joining a guided night tour led by experienced naturalists who know the best locations and calls to listen for.

By following these tips and keeping your eyes peeled (and ears open!), you might just be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this remarkable little owl. And if you do, it’s a memory that will stay with you long after your Costa Rican retreat.
