Here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, nestled amidst the lush greenery and vibrant wildlife, we rarely expect avian visitors from the salty shores. But nature has a way of surprising us, and that’s exactly what happened with the arrival of a special guest – the Brown Noddy!
While Brown Noddies are more commonly found soaring over tropical oceans, far from land, strong winds or storms can sometimes nudge them off course, leading to unexpected appearances inland. And that’s how this intriguing seabird found itself amidst our mountain paradise.
A Chocolate-Colored Charmer
The Brown Noddy is a medium-sized seabird, the largest among the noddy species. Its plumage is a deep, rich chocolate brown, contrasting beautifully with its stark white forehead and crown. This unique color scheme has earned it the nickname “anti-tern” – a playful jab at the more typical white-bodied terns with dark caps.
A Glimpse of Graceful Flight
If you’re lucky enough to spot a Brown Noddy gracing our mountain skies, you’ll be treated to a display of effortless grace. Unlike the hovering and dipping flight patterns of some hummingbirds we see here, the Brown Noddy glides with deep, powerful wingbeats. When perched, however, it adopts a more solemn and almost lethargic posture.
A Creature of the Open Ocean
The Brown Noddy is a true citizen of the open ocean. It spends most of its life soaring over warm seas, often venturing far from land. It’s a skilled diver, adept at plunging into the water to catch fish, squid, and other marine prey. Its long, pointed black bill is perfectly adapted for snatching up its slippery meals.
A Traveler by Chance, Not Choice
While the Brown Noddy might seem like an accidental visitor to our mountains, it’s important to remember that strong winds and storms are a natural part of the ecosystem. These events can sometimes push birds out of their usual ranges, allowing us to witness the incredible diversity of Costa Rica’s avian life, even in the heart of the mountains.
A Rare and Wonderful Sight
If you’re ever fortunate enough to see a Brown Noddy during your stay at our retreat, take a moment to appreciate this unexpected visitor. It’s a reminder that the natural world is full of surprises, and that even the most high-flying ocean dweller can sometimes find itself on a mountain adventure.
