Here, it navigates tight spaces with acrobatic precision, weaving through branches in hot pursuit of unsuspecting prey.

Spotting a Sharpie:

These hawks are best identified by their size and plumage. Males are smaller, with slate-blue backs and a rusty-barred chest. Females are larger and show a similar pattern but with richer colors. Immature Sharp-shinned Hawks have a brown upper body with streaked underparts.

While perched, they may blend in with the foliage, but their sharp yellow eyes often give them away. Keep an ear out for their high-pitched, rapid calls, a series of “kiu, kius” that often indicate a chase is underway.

The Thrill of the Hunt:

Sharp-shinned Hawks are ambush predators, relying on surprise and agility to catch their prey.
