High up in the lush canopy, a flash of blue catches your eye. It’s the Ringed Kingfisher, a magnificent bird with a raucous call that echoes through the Costa Rican mountains. This kingfisher, the largest in the Americas, is a common sight for those lucky enough to visit our secluded retreat here in the heart of Costa Rica.
A King Among Birds
Standing out from its smaller brethren, the Ringed Kingfisher is a true giant. Its plumage is a stunning combination of cool blues and warm browns. The back and wings are a deep, shimmering blue, while the breast is a rich rufous on males and a contrasting blue-gray band bordered by white on females. Atop their head sits a shaggy crest, adding a touch of regality to their already impressive stature. But the most striking feature is undoubtedly their enormous bill. This bright orange beak is a formidable tool, perfectly adapted for their specialized diet.
The Art of the Dive
The Ringed Kingfisher is a predator of the skies, a master fisher with an impressive technique. Perched patiently on a branch overhanging a river or stream, they scan the water below with their keen eyes. Once they spot a fish, they launch into a powerful, silent dive, plunging headfirst into the water with barely a splash. Their large bill snaps shut with incredible force, securing their catch.
A Vocal Resident
The Ringed Kingfisher is far from shy. Their presence is often announced long before they are spotted, thanks to their loud and distinctive calls. A series of harsh “keck” calls or rattling shrieks echo through the forest, a territorial declaration or a warning to rivals. While some might find their calls disruptive, for us at the retreat, they are a welcome soundtrack to the Costa Rican wilderness.
A Place to Witness Wonder
The Ringed Kingfisher is a resident of the lower Rio Grande Valley, which extends from southern Texas into Central America. Here at our mountain retreat in Costa Rica, you’ll find yourselves perfectly positioned to witness these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. With a little patience and a keen eye, you might just spot one perched on a branch by the river, its vibrant colors a splash of life against the verdant backdrop.
