The Laughing Gull: A Coastal Visitor to Costa Rica’s Shores

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Laughing Gull: A Coastal Visitor to Costa Rica’s Shores

While our mountain retreat offers stunning views and an abundance of incredible highland birdlife, Costa Rica boasts a diverse avian tapestry that stretches from the volcanic peaks to the sun-drenched coasts. Today, we set our sights on a creature of the saltwater breeze, the aptly named Laughing Gull.

A Chuckle in the Sky

The Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) is a medium-sized gull, easily identified by its namesake call – a loud, cackling sound that often fills the air near beaches and harbors. These opportunistic feeders are primarily coastal birds, and while not as common as some resident species here in Costa Rica, they can be spotted along both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, particularly during the winter months (November to April).

Distinctive Plumage

Laughing Gulls exhibit distinct plumage variations depending on the season. During breeding season, adults sport a sleek black hood contrasting with a white body and dark gray wings. Their sharp red bill and legs add a vibrant touch. In non-breeding plumage, the black hood fades to a smudgy gray, and the bill and legs turn a darker shade. Juveniles are easily distinguished by their mottled brown and tan feathers, with a characteristic “scaly” pattern on their upper parts. It takes them three years to reach full adult plumage.

Masters of Adaptation

Laughing Gulls are true opportunists. Their diet consists of a wide variety of food sources, including fish, crustaceans, insects, and even carrion. They are adept scavengers, often following fishing boats or patrolling beaches for scraps. They’ll also readily snatch insects and small creatures mid-air, making them fascinating aerial acrobats.

A Glimpse of the Coast at Our Mountain Retreat

While you won’t find Laughing Gulls soaring over our mountain lodge, a day trip to the Pacific or Caribbean coasts offers the chance to witness these lively birds. Here are some popular birding destinations to consider:

  • Puntarenas on the Pacific Coast: This bustling port town is a hotspot for Laughing Gulls, especially during the winter months. Boat tours allow for close-up observation.
  • Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean Coast: This lush rainforest park boasts a beautiful coastline where Laughing Gulls can be seen alongside other coastal birds.
  • Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific Coast: While known for its monkeys and sloths, Manuel Antonio also offers stunning beaches where Laughing Gulls can be spotted.

So, the next time you’re planning a Costa Rican adventure, consider venturing beyond the mountains and exploring the vibrant coastal ecosystems. You might just be rewarded with the sight (and sound) of a Laughing Gull, adding another delightful chapter to your birding experience in this extraordinary country.
