Here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, we take pride in the symphony of birdsong that fills the air each morning. But our feathered friends extend far beyond the vibrant toucans and melodic wrens that grace the highlands. Today, we set our sights a little lower, to the wetland havens nestled within the valleys, where a visitor of sleek elegance and iridescent beauty can sometimes be found – the Glossy Ibis.
This medium-sized wading bird, with a wingspan reaching up to three feet, is a true cosmopolitan. The Glossy Ibis boasts the title of the most widespread ibis species, gracing wetlands on every continent except Antarctica. While not as common a sight in Costa Rica as some of our resident birds, it’s a captivating addition to the biodiversity you might encounter on your wetland explorations during your stay.
A Vision in Feathers
The Glossy Ibis is a master of disguise, its plumage transforming based on the light. In the shade, it appears almost entirely dark, with a long, down-curved bill adding to its statuesque presence. But step into the sunshine, and this bird comes alive. Its feathers shimmer with an iridescent sheen, revealing a captivating interplay of deep greens, rich purples, and even hints of reddish brown. The bare facial skin, usually a dark gray, is rimmed with a thin white border during breeding season, adding a touch of contrast.
A Life on the Move
The Glossy Ibis is a bird of adaptable habits. While some populations are resident breeders in certain regions, Costa Rica’s Glossy Ibis visitors are most likely migratory, arriving from North America during the winter months (roughly September to April) to take advantage of the abundant food sources in our wetlands.
A Master of Marsh Munching
These wetland specialists are adept at foraging in shallow waters. Their long, curved bill probes the mud for small aquatic creatures, including insects, crustaceans, and even small fish. They also employ a clever technique called “trooping,” where they walk in close formation, stirring up the bottom sediment and flushing out unsuspecting prey.
A Glimpse of Glossy Beauty
While not the most common sight in Costa Rica, Glossy Ibises can be encountered in various wetland habitats across the country, from freshwater marshes and rice paddies to saltwater estuaries and mangrove swamps. If you’re exploring these areas during the winter months, keep your eyes peeled for these striking birds wading gracefully or standing motionless, waiting for their next aquatic snack.
With a bit of luck, you might be rewarded with a glimpse of this iridescent visitor, adding a touch of international flair to your Costa Rican birding adventure. So, the next time you find yourself exploring the wetland wonders of Costa Rica, keep an eye out for the Glossy Ibis – a reminder that the natural world is a tapestry woven with threads from every corner of the globe.
