High in the mountains of Costa Rica, where the air chills and mist dances through the pines, you might not expect to find a creature of the open water. But here at Cañas Verdes Retreat, nestled amidst breathtaking scenery, we are fortunate to have occasional visits from a remarkable avian visitor – the Black Tern (Chlidonias niger).
A Master of Transformation
The Black Tern is a study in contrasts. During breeding season, it transforms into a vision of dark elegance. Its entire body becomes a sleek black, with the exception of its silvery-gray wings that shimmer like moonlight on water. This striking plumage makes them stand out against the verdant backdrop of our mountain wetlands.
However, outside of breeding season, the Black Tern undergoes a dramatic shift. Their black feathers fade to a pale gray above and white below, with only a dark patch on their chest and a black “cap” on their head remaining. This transformation allows them to blend in more easily with flocks of other terns during migration.
A Dancer on the Wind
Birdwatchers are captivated by the Black Tern’s graceful flight. Their wings are long and pointed, allowing for agile maneuvers as they skim the water’s surface, searching for their prey. Their characteristic dipping and diving flight pattern, often described as “butterfly-like,” adds to their mesmerizing presence.
A Feast for the Keen Eye
While sightings at Cañas Verdes are not everyday occurrences, with a keen eye and a little patience, you might be lucky enough to witness a Black Tern’s hunting prowess. Unlike most terns that plunge dive for fish, the Black Tern utilizes a unique technique called “hawking.” They hover just above the water, scanning for insects or small fish near the surface. With a quick, precise dip, they snatch their prey mid-air, a testament to their remarkable eyesight and agility.
A Global Traveler
The Black Tern is a true globetrotter. They breed in freshwater marshes and ponds across North America, Europe, and Asia. During their non-breeding season, they embark on incredible migrations, traveling thousands of miles to warmer regions in South America and Africa. Their presence at Cañas Verdes, while fleeting, is a reminder of the interconnectedness of our planet.
A Rare Treasure
The Black Tern’s beauty and adaptability make it a cherished sight for bird enthusiasts. Here at Cañas Verdes Retreat, we are committed to preserving the natural habitats that attract these fascinating creatures. By protecting our wetlands and maintaining a healthy ecosystem, we hope to continue to offer a glimpse into the remarkable world of the Black Tern.
