The Busy Billed Beauty: Spotting the Short-billed Dowitcher on Costa Rica’s Coasts

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Busy Billed Beauty: Spotting the Short-billed Dowitcher on Costa Rica’s Coasts

While our mountain retreat offers stunning views and abundant wildlife, Costa Rica’s true avian diversity lies on its coasts. Today, we set our sights on a fascinating shorebird, the Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus). Though not a permanent resident, this long-distance traveler graces our Pacific and Caribbean shores during its remarkable migrations.

A Shorebird by Trade, a Beauty in Disguise

Despite its name, the Short-billed Dowitcher isn’t exactly lacking in the beak department. Its bill is long and slender, perfectly adapted for probing mudflats and shallow waters for hidden treasures. Stocky and medium-sized, this shorebird embodies the classic shorebird silhouette, easily spotted amongst the coastal flocks.

But don’t be fooled by its seemingly ordinary appearance. During breeding season, the Short-billed Dowitcher undergoes a stunning transformation. Its dull browns transform into a mesmerizing tapestry of warm oranges, rich browns, and striking golds. Look for these colorful patches on their underparts, adding a touch of sunshine to the coastal scene.

Masters of Disguise: Separating the Short from the Long

Telling our feathered visitor apart from its close relative, the Long-billed Dowitcher, can be a challenge for the untrained eye. But fear not, nature enthusiasts! Here are some key pointers:

  • Voice: Listen for the Short-billed Dowitcher’s rapid-fire “tu-tu-tu” calls, delivered in a series and often lower-pitched than the Long-billed Dowitcher’s single, piercing “keek!”
  • Subtle Differences: The Short-billed Dowitcher tends to have a flatter back, a slightly shorter bill, and shorter legs, especially noticeable in mixed flocks.
  • Breeding Plumage: Look for extensive spotting on the sides, more prominent than the Long-billed Dowitcher’s sparse barring. Breeding Short-billed Dowitchers also boast some white on their bellies and paler upperparts with bolder markings.

A Life on the Move: Witnessing the Migration Marvel

The Short-billed Dowitcher is a true champion of long-distance travel. Breeding in grassy wetlands and tundra regions of North America, it embarks on a southward journey, with Costa Rica featuring prominently on its migration map. Look for these birds arriving on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts as early as late June.

Finding the Short-billed Dowitcher: A Coastal Adventure

While the Short-billed Dowitcher isn’t restricted to specific habitats, it favors saltwater marshes, beaches, and mudflats. Here are some prime locations to spot them during their migratory stopover:

  • Pacific Coast: Gulf of Nicoya, Carara National Park, Curré Wildlife Refuge
  • Caribbean Coast: Tortuguero National Park, Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge, Jalova Lagoon

Witnessing the Short-billed Dowitcher’s fascinating feeding behavior is a treat. Watch as they probe the mud with their long bills, resembling a sewing machine needle in rapid motion.

From its dazzling breeding plumage to its remarkable migratory journey, the Short-billed Dowitcher adds another layer of wonder to Costa Rica’s coastal tapestry. So, the next time you find yourself on the shores of our beautiful country, keep your eyes peeled for this busy-billed beauty!
