The King Vulture, with its vibrant plumage and impressive wingspan, is a Costa Rican icon, gracing the skies with its regal presence. While some might find vultures lacking in charm, here at our secluded sanctuary, we celebrate this vital scavenger as a crucial part of the rainforest’s delicate ecosystem.
A King Unlike Any Other
Unlike its black and grey vulture cousins, the King Vulture is a spectacle of contrasting colors. Its body is adorned in immaculate white, a stark contrast to the dramatic black trailing edge of its wings and tail. But the true crown jewel lies on its head. Lacking feathers, the King Vulture’s head transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues – bright yellows, fiery oranges, deep purples, and even blues, all accentuated by a prominent orange caruncle (wattle) on its beak. This striking display serves not just for aesthetics; the vibrant colors are thought to play a role in social interactions and dominance hierarchies within the vulture community.
