Soaring Through the Rainforest: The Broad-winged Hawk

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / Soaring Through the Rainforest: The Broad-winged Hawk

High above the lush canopy of our Costa Rican retreat, a piercing whistle cuts through the air. It’s the unmistakable call of the Broad-winged Hawk, a magnificent raptor gracing the skies with its agile presence. While sightings of these soaring birds are a common delight here in the mountains, their story extends far beyond our secluded haven.

A Master of Migration

The Broad-winged Hawk is a medium-sized wonder, belonging to the genus Buteo. During the summer months, some subspecies call eastern North America home, ranging as far west as British Columbia and Texas. But with the changing seasons, these incredible birds embark on an awe-inspiring journey. They migrate south, transforming the skies of Central and South America with their presence. Here at our Costa Rican retreat, we have the privilege of witnessing these migrants during their winter stay.

Built for Flight

The Broad-winged Hawk’s physical characteristics are a testament to its mastery of the skies. Its wings, as the name suggests, are broad and relatively short, giving it a distinct, tapered appearance in flight. The tail is short, further streamlining the bird’s silhouette. This unique build allows for exceptional maneuverability, perfect for navigating the dense rainforests and mountain ranges of Costa Rica.

Spotting a Broad-winged Hawk

While soaring high above the treetops is a common behavior for the Broad-winged Hawk, keen observers might be lucky enough to catch them perched on a branch, keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings. Adults are adorned with a rich brown plumage on their upper body, while their underside boasts reddish-brown barring with bold black and white tail bands. Juveniles exhibit a similar color scheme, but with a slightly blotchier pattern below and less defined tail bands.

A Glimpse into the Life of a Predator

The Broad-winged Hawk plays a vital role in the Costa Rican ecosystem. As a skilled predator, it primarily feeds on small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and even large insects. Their keen eyesight allows them to spot prey from great distances, and their swift flight makes them adept hunters.

A Privileged Encounter

If you’re fortunate enough to spot a Broad-winged Hawk during your stay at our Costa Rican retreat, take a moment to appreciate this magnificent visitor. Watch in awe as it effortlessly navigates the air currents, a silent testament to the wonders of the natural world. With a little patience and a dash of luck, you might even hear its piercing whistle echoing through the rainforest, a melody that perfectly complements the symphony of life in Costa Rica.
