Soaring Above the Clouds: A Look at the Magnificent Cory’s Shearwater

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / Soaring Above the Clouds: A Look at the Magnificent Cory’s Shearwater

While our mountain retreat offers breathtaking views of the Costa Rican highlands, a whole other world exists just beyond the horizon – the vast expanse of the ocean. Today, we take a detour from the vibrant rainforest creatures and set our sights on a majestic seabird, the Cory’s shearwater (Calonectris borealis).

These incredible birds won’t be gracing the skies above our mountain lodge, but for those venturing to the coastal regions of Costa Rica, particularly during the late summer months, keeping an eye out for Cory’s shearwater can be a truly rewarding experience.

Masters of the Open Ocean

Cory’s shearwater is a large seabird, belonging to the shearwater family (Procellariidae). With a wingspan reaching up to 6.5 feet, they effortlessly glide across the waves, their powerful wings propelling them in long, graceful arcs. Their plumage is a beautiful contrast of dark greyish-brown above and white underneath, making them appear almost shadow-like against the cerulean ocean.

A Life on the Move

Unlike the resident birds that call our mountain retreat home, Cory’s shearwater is a true wanderer. They breed colonially on rocky islands in the eastern Atlantic, but their migratory spirit takes them on incredible journeys across the vastness of the ocean. During the late summer months (July-August), Cory’s shearwaters can be seen gracing the waters off the east coast of North America, including Costa Rica.

Skilled Hunters and Ocean Voyagers

These birds are perfectly adapted for life at sea. Their streamlined bodies and powerful wings allow them to soar effortlessly for long distances, barely needing to flap. Keen eyesight helps them spot prey like fish, squid, and crustaceans from the surface, while a hooked beak and specialized salt glands make them adept hunters and survivors in the harsh ocean environment.

A Glimpse of a Different World

While spotting a Cory’s shearwater might not be on the agenda for everyone visiting our mountain retreat, for those venturing to the coasts, particularly around the Pacific side, keeping an eye out for these magnificent birds can be a magical experience. They are a fleeting reminder of the vastness of the ocean and the incredible diversity of life that exists just beyond our mountain haven.

Listen to the Call of the Wild

For those lucky enough to see a Cory’s shearwater, listen closely for their vocalizations. They are known for their loud, wailing calls, which can often be heard echoing across the waves, adding another layer to the awe-inspiring experience of encountering these remarkable ocean wanderers.

So, the next time you find yourself on the coast of Costa Rica, keep your eyes peeled for the Cory’s shearwater. It may just be a glimpse, but it’s a window into a fascinating world that exists far beyond the lush rainforests and towering mountains of our mountain retreat.
