A Rare Visitor from the Southern Seas: The Kelp Gull in Costa Rica

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Rare Visitor from the Southern Seas: The Kelp Gull in Costa Rica

High up in our Costa Rican mountain retreat, the symphony of birdsong is a constant companion. But even for the most avid birders, there’s always the chance of an unexpected melody – a rare visitor flitting through our pristine ecosystems. Today, we turn our binoculars to the skies in search of the Kelp Gull, a fascinating traveler from the Southern Hemisphere.

The Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) is a charismatic character, boasting a wingspan that can reach an impressive 5 feet. Its plumage is a study in contrasts – a sleek, white body offsets by jet-black wingtips and a mantle (the area between the wings and the back) of a similar dark shade. A bright yellow bill and greenish-yellow legs complete the picture.

While primarily a bird of the Southern Hemisphere, with populations concentrated around South America, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, the Kelp Gull is an occasional wanderer. In Costa Rica, it’s considered an extreme rarity. There have only been two documented sightings, both on the Caribbean coast, far from our mountain retreat.

So, what would make a Kelp Gull travel so far north? Experts believe strong winds or following fishing boats could be the culprits, inadvertently carrying these oceangoing birds far from their usual haunts.

Should you find yourself on the Caribbean coast and spot a large gull with the distinctive markings mentioned above, congratulations! You’ve just witnessed a remarkable avian visitor.

However, for most of our guests at the retreat, the Kelp Gull will remain a fascinating footnote in Costa Rica’s rich birdlife. But don’t fret! Our mountain location offers a wealth of its own avian wonders. Keep an eye out for the resplendent Resplendent Quetzal, the elusive Emerald Toucanet, or the comical Slaty-tailed Trogon.

Even if the Kelp Gull eludes you, Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity promises an unforgettable birding experience. So, pack your binoculars, hone your listening skills, and prepare to be enchanted by the chorus of the Costa Rican mountains.
