A Flash of Turquoise in the Rainforest: The Enigmatic Keel-Billed Motmot

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Turquoise in the Rainforest: The Enigmatic Keel-Billed Motmot

High in the Costa Rican mountains, where the emerald embrace of the rainforest reigns supreme, a flash of turquoise might catch your eye. This isn’t a mystical sprite, but the stunning Keel-billed Motmot, a resident of these verdant heights. Here at our mountain retreat, nestled amidst the whispering leaves, you have a chance to encounter this little-known gem of the avian world.

A Master of Camouflage

The Keel-billed Motmot is a master of disguise. Its plumage is a symphony of muted greens, blending seamlessly with the rainforest backdrop. A flash of orange on the forehead, a bold black mask framing its eyes, and a vibrant turquoise stripe above the eye are the only hints that betray its presence. This cryptic coloration allows it to perch motionless for long periods, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey.

Kin or Kindred Spirit? The Mystery of the Broad-billed Motmot

The Keel-billed Motmot is a subject of debate in the scientific community. Closely related to the Broad-billed Motmot, some experts believe they might even be the same species. Both share similar sizes, shapes, and even calls. But the Keel-billed’s distinct facial markings and slightly smaller stature set it apart. Here at the retreat, we’re fortunate to have sightings of both these motmots, offering you a chance to compare and form your own conclusions!

A Hunter with a Perch

Like other motmots, the Keel-billed is an expert insectivore. Perched on a low branch, it scans the forest floor with its keen eyes. Once it spots a juicy insect – a grasshopper, perhaps, or a beetle – it swoops down with surprising agility, its long, broad bill perfectly adapted for snatching prey.

A Solitary Spirit

The Keel-billed Motmot is a solitary bird, preferring to spend its days alone or with a mate. Unlike its more flamboyant relatives, it doesn’t engage in elaborate courtship displays. Its call, a deep, nasal “ohhng” repeated every few seconds, is more subdued, echoing through the rainforest with a melancholic charm.

A Rare Sight

The Keel-billed Motmot is uncommon and has a limited range within Costa Rica. Here in the mountain forests surrounding our retreat, however, it finds a suitable habitat. With a little patience and a keen eye, you might be lucky enough to spot this shy beauty.

More Than Just a Bird: An Indicator of a Healthy Ecosystem

The presence of the Keel-billed Motmot is a positive sign for the health of the rainforest ecosystem. It thrives in pristine environments, and its decline can indicate habitat degradation. By protecting these precious rainforests, we ensure the survival of not just the Keel-billed Motmot, but countless other irreplaceable species.

So, as you explore the verdant trails around our mountain retreat, keep your eyes peeled for a flash of turquoise. With a bit of luck, you might encounter the enigmatic Keel-billed Motmot, a tiny ambassador for the wonders of the Costa Rican rainforest.
