For those lucky enough to spot this vibrant visitor at our secluded Costa Rican retreat, a moment of pure sunshine awaits.
A Life Bathed in Green
Also known as the Hoffmann’s Conure, the Sulphur-winged Parakeet is a medium-sized parrot, typically reaching around 23 cm in length. Their primary residence is Costa Rica’s humid highland forests and woodlands, with sightings ranging from a lofty 3,000 meters above sea level down to 1,300 meters during the wet season.
A Dazzling Display of Color
The Sulphur-winged Parakeet’s name is a true reflection of its most striking feature. In flight, their wings become a burst of sunshine, with the inner flight feathers a brilliant yellow. This vibrant flash stands out against their predominantly green plumage, making them a captivating sight against the verdant backdrop of the rainforest.
A Closer Look
A perch-side observation reveals further details of this delightful bird. Their head and chest are adorned with a delicate scaling of orange-yellow feathers, adding a touch of warmth to their overall palette. A singular pop of color graces their cheek – a distinct red spot on the auriculars, a feature unique amongst Costa Rican parakeets. Their tail is another testament to their colorful personality, tipped with a broad band of dull red, appearing entirely red from below.
