Welcome back, nature enthusiasts, to another feathered friend gracing our Costa Rican mountain retreat! Today, we turn our gaze to a parrot that injects a burst of color into the emerald tapestry of our rainforests: the Red-lored Parrot (Amazona autumnalis).
While not exclusive to Costa Rica, these medium-sized (around 14 inches) parrots are a common sight in our lowland areas, particularly where patches of forest meet farmland. If you’re an early riser, you might be lucky enough to catch them flying overhead in pairs or small groups, their bright green plumage a stark contrast to the pre-dawn sky.
But what truly sets them apart is the namesake red splash – a vibrant patch that adorns their foreheads and lores (the area between the beak and eye). In some subspecies, a sunny yellow patch graces their cheeks, making them a visual treat.
These aren’t the shyest rainforest residents. Red-lored parrots are known to be quite vocal, filling the air with their squawks and calls. But don’t mistake their boisterousness for carelessness. They’re actually quite vigilant, keeping a watchful eye out for predators and taking flight at the slightest disturbance.
Speaking of predators, avoiding them is key to the Red-lored parrot’s survival. Interestingly, recent studies suggest that their success in nesting is directly linked to their wariness. They tend to choose inconspicuous nesting sites and remain discreet around them, making it harder for predators to locate their vulnerable chicks.
While exploring the lower regions of our retreat, keep an eye out for these charismatic birds. Their preferred habitat includes forest edges, semi-open areas, and agricultural land with scattered tall trees. They’re particularly drawn to fruiting trees, where they indulge in a delicious variety of treats – palms, figs, legumes, and even cultivated fruits like mangoes and citrus.
So, the next time you’re out exploring, listen for the raucous calls and watch the vibrant green blur against the backdrop of the rainforest. With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might just be rewarded with a sighting of the Red-lored parrot, a dazzling splash of color adding to the magic of Costa Rica.
