A Flash of Orange in the Rainforest: The Dazzling Orange-collared Manakin

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Orange in the Rainforest: The Dazzling Orange-collared Manakin

Here at our Costa Rican retreat nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, nature unveils its wonders at every turn. From the vibrant flora to the symphony of bird calls, our haven offers a breathtaking immersion into the heart of a thriving ecosystem. Today, we turn our focus to a captivating resident – the Orange-collared Manakin.

This tiny titan, a mere 10 centimeters (4 inches) in length, boasts a plumage that defies its size. Males are a captivating study in contrasts. Their crown, mid-back, wings, and tail are a sleek, inky black, sharply offset by an olive-green rump. But the true showstopper is the blaze of color adorning their head, neck, breast, and upper back – a vibrant orange that sets them ablaze against the verdant backdrop of the rainforest.

Females, on the other hand, are paragons of subtle elegance. They are cloaked in a beautiful olive-green, with a slightly brighter yellow belly. However, a keen eye will spot two distinguishing features – bright orange legs and a hint of a brighter yellow hue compared to other female manakins.

The Orange-collared Manakin is an endemic resident breeder in Costa Rica and western Panama. While you might encounter them in the central valley region, their preferred habitat lies in the lush embrace of the forests, secondary growth areas, and even plantations. So, keep your eyes peeled as you explore the trails around our retreat – you might just catch a glimpse of this fiery fellow flitting amongst the foliage.

Listen for the Snap!

The Orange-collared Manakin is not just a visual treat; it’s an auditory one as well. Males possess a unique display behavior that involves a loud, snapping sound. They perch on a specific branch, puff out their bright orange plumage, and then snap their wings together with a sharp snap. This display is believed to attract females and intimidate rivals.

A Life in the Trees

These little acrobats are arboreal, meaning they spend most of their lives amongst the branches. They are insectivores, flitting from branch to branch in search of their tiny prey. They also have a fondness for ripe fruits, and spotting them at a fruiting tree is a delightful experience.

A Jewel of the Rainforest

The Orange-collared Manakin is a dazzling emblem of Costa Rica’s biodiversity. Their vibrant plumage, captivating display, and energetic presence are a constant source of wonder for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike. As you explore the verdant tapestry of our retreat, keep an eye out for this fiery flash of orange – a fleeting glimpse of this magnificent little bird is sure to leave a lasting impression.
