Sanderlings are the epitome of wanderlust. These small, stocky shorebirds embark on epic journeys, breeding in the high Arctic tundra and migrating down to the warm embrace of Costa Rica’s beaches during the winter months. While uncommon residents, they grace our Pacific and Caribbean coasts from September to May, transforming the shoreline into their temporary haven.

Spotting a Sanderling is a delightful experience. Imagine a flash of pale sand-colored feathers, accented by a dark chest in breeding plumage, flitting along the water’s edge. Their short, dark legs propel them in a blur of motion as they chase the receding waves, their black bill probing the exposed sand for a delectable meal.
