A Flash of Green: Unveiling the Brown-throated Parakeet

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Green: Unveiling the Brown-throated Parakeet

Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we wake up every day to a symphony of birdsong. Today, let’s turn our attention to a vibrant resident flitting through the trees – the Brown-throated Parakeet (Eupsittula pertinax).

A splash of color:

Imagine a bird dipped in springtime – that’s the Brown-throated Parakeet. Its feathers are a verdant green, like freshly sprouted leaves, with a paler yellowish hue gracing its underbelly. A striking feature is the namesake brown patch adorning its throat and upper breast, adding a touch of earthiness to its vibrant palette. Look closely, and you might even spot a hint of orange sprinkled on its abdomen, making it a truly captivating sight.

Listen for the chirp:

While their plumage is undeniably eye-catching, Brown-throated Parakeets are more subtle when it comes to vocalizations. Their calls are described as grating or squeaky, but to the trained ear, they hold a certain charm, blending seamlessly with the rainforest’s soundtrack.

Social butterflies:

These parakeets are rarely seen alone. They move in small flocks, their synchronized flight patterns creating a mesmerizing dance across the sky. Spotting them perched on branches, their green bodies camouflaged amongst the leaves, can be a delightful surprise.

A taste of the tropics:

Brown-throated Parakeets are omnivores, enjoying a varied diet. They favor fruits found in gardens, forest edges, and secondary growth areas. They’ll also indulge in seeds, flowers, and even the occasional insect, making them valuable pollinators that contribute to the rainforest’s health.

Where to find them:

While you might encounter Brown-throated Parakeets in Costa Rica’s Central Valley region, their presence is more prominent in the Caribbean lowlands and foothills. Here, at our mountain retreat, you have a good chance of seeing them flitting through the trees, their green forms a delightful splash of color against the lush backdrop.

A touch of wonder:

These social, vibrant creatures add a touch of magic to the Costa Rican rainforest. So, keep your eyes peeled (and ears tuned) during your stay at our retreat. You might just be rewarded with a glimpse of the Brown-throated Parakeet, a dazzling reminder of the beauty and diversity that Costa Rica has to offer.
