Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, nature puts on a daily spectacle. From the croaking chorus of the red-eyed tree frog to the majestic flight of the scarlet macaw, our haven is teeming with vibrant life. Today, we turn our gaze to a captivating resident of the forest’s edge – the White-collared Manakin.
A Splendor of Contrasts
This little ball of energy, measuring a mere 4 inches (10-11 centimeters), is a marvel of contrasting colors. The male White-collared Manakin is a vision of boldness. His jet-black crown and wings become a canvas for a bright yellow breast that pops like sunshine. But the star of the show is undoubtedly the namesake – a crisp white collar that encircles his neck like a miniature gentleman’s cravat.
A Lady in Olive Green
The female White-collared Manakin is a study in elegant camouflage. Cloaked in olive green from head to tail, she blends seamlessly into the foliage, a vital adaptation for nesting and raising chicks. Despite their contrasting appearances, both males and females share a striking feature – bright red legs that add a vibrant splash of color.
Dancing for Love
The White-collared Manakin’s claim to fame is its captivating courtship display. Males clear a small stage on a branch, meticulously removing any leaves or debris. This becomes their dance floor, where they perform an elaborate routine to impress potential mates. Their act involves a series of rapid bobs, bows, and wing flicks, accompanied by a series of clicks and snaps produced with their wings. It’s a mesmerizing performance, a dazzling display of avian acrobatics.
A Forest Feast
These lively birds are omnivores, flitting through the understory and forest edges in search of a delicious meal. Their diet consists of a delightful mix of fruits, berries, and insects. Keen observers might spot them perched patiently on a branch, waiting to snatch a passing insect mid-flight.
Habitat Hotspot
While you might encounter the White-collared Manakin in the Central Valley region, their preferred habitat is the humid forest edges and second-growth thickets of the tropical lowlands. Keep an eye out for them near Heliconia plants, which they seem particularly drawn to.
Listen for the Snaps
Though not known for elaborate songs, White-collared Manakins do have a distinctive vocalization. Listen for a series of sharp, snapping sounds emanating from the forest – that might just be a male White-collared Manakin trying to attract a mate or defend his territory.
