Here at Hotel Rivel, nature’s wonders surround you. From the vibrant flora to the symphony of bird calls, every day is an exciting exploration. Today, we turn our binoculars to a resident of the forested slopes – the Black-chested Jay (Cyanocorax affinis).
A Striking Beauty
Measuring around 13 inches long, the Black-chested Jay is a captivating sight. Unlike its boisterous blue jay cousin found further north, this jay prefers a quieter elegance. Its head and chest are a sleek black, adorned with a touch of mystery. Violet-blue speckles dance above and below its pale yellow eye, while a matching stripe graces its cheek. The stark contrast continues with a snowy white belly and a long tail tipped in white. The upper parts and wings are a deep indigo blue, creating a truly stunning color palette.
A Family Affair
The Black-chested Jay is a social bird, typically found in small family groups. They forage together through the forest canopy, their sharp eyes searching for insects, fruits, and seeds. They’re also known opportunists, occasionally raiding the nests of other birds for eggs or nestlings. Their calls are a mix of harsh double “chee-chees” and surprising melodic notes, adding to the vibrant soundscape of the forest.
A Forest Home
While you might see the Black-chested Jay flitting across the trails near Hotel Rivel, their true home is within the lush embrace of the Costa Rican forests. They favor a variety of habitats, from the dry forests of the lowlands to the humid havens of the mountains. They can even adapt to secondary forests, those recovering from past disturbances, demonstrating their resilience.
A Species to Seek
The Black-chested Jay may not be as flamboyant as some of its corvid relatives, but its understated elegance and secretive nature make it a rewarding bird to spot. Keep your eyes peeled on your hikes and walks, and with a little patience, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this beautiful denizen of the Costa Rican mountains.
