High up in the emerald canopy of Costa Rica’s mountains, a flash of blue catches your eye. It’s the Blue-headed Parrot, a stunning medium-sized bird with a plumage that reflects the vibrancy of its tropical home. Here at our mountain retreat, nestled amidst the lush rainforests, sightings of this charismatic creature are a frequent delight for our guests.
The Blue-headed Parrot, also known as the Blue-headed Pionus (Pionus menstruus), is a true resident of the tropics. Its range stretches from Costa Rica and Venezuela in Central America, all the way down to Bolivia and Brazil in South America, with sightings on the Caribbean island of Trinidad as well.
A Jewel-toned Wonder
Standing at roughly 27 centimeters (11 inches) tall, the Blue-headed Parrot is a sight to behold. Its most striking feature, as its name suggests, is its head and neck. This area is bathed in a magnificent, deep blue, contrasting beautifully with the rest of its body. The majority of its plumage is a lush green, mirroring the verdant rainforests it calls home. But the blue isn’t the only pop of color. Look closely, and you’ll see flashes of red on the undersides of its tail feathers, adding another layer of vibrancy to this feathered jewel.
A Life in the Trees
The Blue-headed Parrot is a creature of the forest canopy. Here, amidst the dense foliage, it finds its food and builds its nest. It’s an omnivore, with a diet that consists of fruits, seeds, nuts, and even the occasional flower or insect.
These parrots are intelligent birds, known for their playful nature and loud vocalizations. Their call is a distinctive screech, often delivered in a doubled or tripled sequence, echoing through the rainforest.
While not an endangered species, the Blue-headed Parrot’s population is considered to be decreasing. This is due to habitat loss from deforestation. As more and more rainforest is cleared for agriculture and development, these beautiful birds lose their homes.
