A Granivorous Serenade
Classified as a tanager (family Thraupidae), the Buff-throated Saltator is a seed specialist. Its strong, conical beak is perfectly adapted to crack the toughest seeds, making it a frequent visitor to fruit trees and flowering shrubs. But these feathered foragers are far from silent eaters. The males, with their slate-gray head and olive-green back, are famous for their melodious duets. Listen closely, and you might be captivated by their “cheery cheery” chirps, often answered with a sweet “cheery to you”.
A Cinnamon Patch and a Flash of White
While the Buff-throated Saltator doesn’t boast the most vibrant plumage, its coloration is a study in subtle elegance. Its main feature is a cinnamon-colored patch on the throat, bordered by a striking black mustache-like stripe. This patch adds a touch of warmth to its cool-toned body. The head is a beautiful slate gray, adorned with a crisp white eyebrow that extends like a question mark over its eye. Its upper parts are a soft olive green, transitioning to a light gray on the underparts, which darken to a warm cinnamon on the lower belly.
A Forest Favorite
The Buff-throated Saltator prefers the embrace of humid lowlands. It is most often seen at forest edges, secondary forests, and even plantations. While not the shyest of birds, they tend to forage quietly among the leaves, making their presence known mainly through their melodious songs. Enthusiastic birdwatchers can look for them perched on branches, meticulously cracking seeds or enjoying the bounty of a fruit tree.
