The Southern Lapwing: A Surprisingly Recent Costa Rican Resident

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Southern Lapwing: A Surprisingly Recent Costa Rican Resident

High in the mountains of Costa Rica, our retreat offers a haven for peace and tranquility. But beyond the serenity, there’s a vibrant world waiting to be explored. Today, we turn our gaze to a fascinating resident, the Southern Lapwing.

While the name might conjure images of faraway lands, this wader species has become a recent success story in Costa Rica. Just a few decades ago, Southern Lapwings were exclusive to South America, except for the dense Amazon rainforest, the high Andes, and the arid west coast. But in the last 40 years, they’ve begun a remarkable northward expansion, establishing themselves in Central America.

A Creature of Open Spaces

Look for the Southern Lapwing in pastures, agricultural fields, and the edges of wetlands. They favor open habitats, similar to their historical South American range. Our retreat’s surroundings, with pockets of cleared land amidst the mountain forests, might just provide the perfect spot for these adaptable birds.

A Striking Appearance

The Southern Lapwing is a captivating sight. Imagine a bird with a jaunty crest and a black breast contrasting sharply with a white belly. Their heads are a cool gray, and their wings, when spread in flight, showcase a bold pattern of black and white.

A Noisy Neighbor (But a Helpful One!)

Be prepared for a bit of a racket! Southern Lapwings are known for their loud, grating calls. But don’t let that deter you – their vocalizations might actually be a sign of a healthy ecosystem. These waders are insectivores, feasting on grasshoppers, worms, and other invertebrates. Their presence helps keep pest populations in check, benefiting the entire environment.

From Vulnerable to Expanding

While the Southern Lapwing is thriving in Costa Rica, it faces challenges in its original South American range. Habitat loss and agricultural practices threaten their populations in some areas. Here in Costa Rica, their recent arrival offers a glimmer of hope for the species as a whole.

Witnessing a Recent Arrival

Keeping an eye out for the Southern Lapwing adds another layer of wonder to your Costa Rican birding experience. They might not be the shy, rainforest denizens you typically associate with the country, but their presence is a testament to the dynamic nature of the avian world. So, next time you’re exploring the open areas around our retreat, listen for the grating call and see if you can spot this fascinating newcomer.
