A Master of Leaf-Littering:
True to its name, the Scaly-throated Leaftosser (Sclerurus guatemalensis) is a busy bird with a specific technique for finding its lunch. This compact, insectivorous fellow, measuring just 16.5 to 18 cm (6.5 to 7.1 inches) in length, spends its days hopping along the forest floor. Its long, thin bill acts as a probe, meticulously flipping over leaves and detritus in the leaf litter. This tireless effort unearths a smorgasbord of tasty treats – insects, spiders, and other invertebrates that make up the Scaly-throated Leaftosser’s diet.
Spotting the Scaly Gem:
While not the most vibrantly colored bird, the Scaly-throated Leaftosser has a distinctive charm. Both sexes sport a dark brown crown and nape, with a subtle scalloping pattern that gives the bird its name. The back transitions from dark brown to a rich, reddish-brown on the rump and uppertail coverts, while the tail itself is a deeper shade of brown. The face is a mosaic of browns, and the throat – the namesake feature – boasts whitish feathers edged in darker tones, creating a delightful, scaled effect.
A keen eye might spot the Scaly-throated Leaftosser foraging on the ground in the shade of the rainforest canopy. More often than not, however, you’ll hear it before you see it. When flushed from its leaf-littering labors, the Scaly-throated Leaftosser lets out a sharp, whistled “skweek” call, a surefire sign of this industrious insectivore at work.
A Solitary or Social Butterfly (Well, Not Quite):
The Scaly-throated Leaftosser is typically seen alone or in pairs. However, they might occasionally join mixed-species foraging flocks, a temporary alliance with other bird species to more efficiently glean the rainforest floor for hidden treats.
Habitat Haven:
The Scaly-throated Leaftosser thrives in humid lowland evergreen forests, particularly those with a sparse undergrowth and a closed canopy. They also frequent mature secondary forests and montane evergreen woodlands.
