Here at the Costa Rican Retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we share our haven with a dazzling array of birds. Today, we turn our binoculars to a little acrobat of the forest, the aptly named Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner (Anabacerthia variegaticeps).

While not the most vibrantly colored bird, the Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner holds its own charm. This little insectivore, measuring a mere 5.9 to 6.7 inches, is a resident of the humid evergreen forests that grace the foothills and highlands of Costa Rica.

A Master of Disguise (Almost)

The Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner might test your birding skills at first glance. Its plumage is a medley of browns and buffs, with a grayish-brown crown streaked with faint buff. The back showcases a rich rufescent brown that transitions into a chestnut tail. But look closer, birding enthusiasts! The secret lies in the bird’s namesake – the throat. Here, you might glimpse (with some patience) a subtle pattern of pale buff feathers, creating a hint of “scales.”

Spectacles for a Reason

However, the true giveaway feature is the bird’s spectacular “face.” The Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner boasts a wide, bright eyering and supercilium in a beautiful ocraceous buff color. This distinctive marking, earning it the nickname “Spectacled Foliage-gleaner,” stands out against the darker brown lores and ear coverts.

A Life Among the Leaves

These little acrobats are a treat to watch. They flit restlessly through the dense foliage, clambering along branches and disappearing into mossy tangles with impressive agility. They’re not shy about hanging upside down either, much like chickadees, as they meticulously explore every nook and cranny for hidden insects.

While primarily solitary or in pairs, the Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner can also be spotted joining mixed-species feeding flocks. Keep an ear out for their calls, described as high-pitched and thin, often repeated in short bursts.

Finding Your Spectacled Friend

The Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner has a wide range in Costa Rica. You can find them in most areas except Nicaragua, with their presence stretching from Mexico through Central America and into Colombia and Ecuador. Here at the Costa Rican Retreat, their presence adds another delightful song to the symphony of the forest.

So, the next time you’re exploring the hidden corners of our mountain retreat, keep an eye out for a flash of brown flitting through the leaves. With a little patience, you might just spot the Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner, a little gem with a spectacular secret.

Happy Birding!
