High in the Costa Rican mountains, where the air is crisp and the emerald canopy filters the sunlight, lives a tiny songbird with a voice that belies its size. This is the Scrub Euphonia (Euphonia affinis), a vibrant finch that inhabits the very areas explored by our guests at our secluded mountain retreat.
The Scrub Euphonia is a true resident of the highlands. While its close relative, the Yellow-throated Euphonia, prefers the lowlands, the Scrub Euphonia thrives in the drier forests and woodlands that cling to the mountain slopes. So, as you embark on your nature walks or simply relax on your balcony, keep your ears tuned for the cheerful melodies of this little songster.
A Flash of Color in the Green
The Scrub Euphonia is a feast for the eyes. The male, a vision of contrasting colors, boasts a sleek black head and throat that sets off a bright yellow patch on its forehead. Its back and wings are a cool, smoky gray, while its underparts are a vibrant, sunshine yellow. The female Scrub Euphonia is less flashy, with an overall olive-green plumage and a touch of yellow on her underbelly.
A Social Butterfly with a Sweet Tooth
These euphonias are rarely seen alone. They flit about in pairs or small groups, their constant chirps and whistles creating a delightful chorus in the mountain air. These social butterflies are particularly fond of mistletoe, where they gather to feast on the sticky berries. They’ll also readily visit fruiting trees and shrubs, their sharp beaks adept at extracting seeds and juicy morsels.
A Resilient and Adaptable Bird
The Scrub Euphonia is a testament to nature’s adaptability. While it prefers the natural habitat of the mountain forests, it has shown a remarkable ability to thrive in disturbed areas. Second-growth forests, agricultural fields with scattered trees, and even gardens can become home to these little finches. This adaptability has ensured their continued success despite habitat changes.
A Song to Welcome You Home
As the sun begins to set, casting long shadows across the mountains, listen closely. The sweet melodies of the Scrub Euphonia will likely fill the air, a gentle serenade as dusk descends. Here, at our mountain retreat, the Scrub Euphonia is more than just a bird; it’s a part of the symphony of nature that surrounds you, a constant reminder of the beauty and resilience of life in the Costa Rican highlands.
