The Enigmatic Choco Screech-Owl: A Hidden Gem of the Rainforest

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / The Enigmatic Choco Screech-Owl: A Hidden Gem of the Rainforest

High in the lush canopy of Costa Rica’s mountains, a shy and secretive hunter observes the world with piercing yellow eyes. This, my friends, is the Choco screech-owl, a recently identified owl species that dwells in the emerald embrace of the rainforest.

For years, the Choco screech-owl (Megascops centralis) remained a mystery, often mistaken for its close relative, the Vermiculated Screech-Owl. But a closer look revealed a distinct owl, a resident gracing the forests of the Panama Canal zone eastward into northwestern Colombia, with a sprinkle of its presence reaching western Ecuador.

A Master of Camouflage

The Choco screech-owl is a tiny titan of the night. Its stature is similar to a small soda can, making it perfectly suited for navigating the dense foliage of the rainforest understory. Its plumage is a masterpiece of camouflage, transitioning between a grayish-brown and a reddish hue, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the dappled light filtering through the leaves.

Spotting this elusive owl by sight is a challenge, but fear not, nature enthusiasts! The Choco screech-owl has a unique vocal talent. Its song is a haunting purring trill, often mistaken for the call of a toad or insect. This melodic disguise allows it to communicate and hunt undetected.

A Life Unveiled

Much about the Choco screech-owl’s life remains a secret. Due to its recent recognition as a distinct species, dedicated studies haven’t yet unraveled the details of its breeding habits, preferred foods, nesting preferences, and overall habitat tolerance.

Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the mountains of the Central Valley region, you might be lucky enough to hear the enchanting trill of the Choco screech-owl echoing through the rainforest at night. While sightings are uncommon, the chance encounter with this little owl is a truly magical experience.

Listen to the Rainforest

As you embark on your nature walks through the verdant trails of our retreat, keep your ears tuned for the telltale purring trill. With a little patience, you might become one of the few to have heard the song of this enigmatic rainforest dweller.

The Choco screech-owl is a beautiful reminder of the hidden wonders that lurk within the Costa Rican wilderness. Its existence speaks to the incredible biodiversity waiting to be discovered in the heart of this tropical paradise.

So, the next time you find yourself enveloped by the symphony of the rainforest at night, listen closely. You might just be rewarded with the haunting melody of the Choco screech-owl, a secret melody whispered by the guardian of the understory.
