Home / aves / El Energético Chispazo de Color: El Kiskadee Menor

High in the canopy, a flash of yellow catches your eye. It darts from branch to branch, a burst of sunshine against the emerald foliage. This is the Lesser Kiskadee, a charismatic flycatcher that graces the wetlands and lowland forests of Costa Rica.

While you may not find this little songbird adorning the mountains surrounding our retreat, it is a common sight in the bustling lowlands, particularly near bodies of water like rivers, streams, and ponds. So, if you’re planning an adventure through the lowlands after your retreat, keep your eyes peeled for this feathered friend!

A Distinctive Appearance

Standing at just 15 to 18 cm tall, the Lesser Kiskadee is a bundle of energy. Its plumage is a striking combination of contrasting colors. The upper parts are a warm, rich brown, with the wing and tail feathers edged with a hint of rusty. But the true stars of the show are the head and underparts.

The head is a black and white masterpiece. An elegant black crown and mask frame a bright white supercilium, a stripe boldly extending over the eye. The throat is a clean white, creating a stark contrast with the vivid yellow that dominates the underparts. This sunlit yellow stretches from the chest to the belly, turning the Lesser Kiskadee into a beacon of color in the lush greenery.

A Life at the Water’s Edge

Unlike its larger cousin, the Great Kiskadee, the Lesser Kiskadee is found almost exclusively near water. Rivers, streams, ponds, and even flooded forests are its preferred habitat. Here, it perches prominently on branches jutting out over the water, its keen eyes scanning for prey.

The Lesser Kiskadee is an insectivore, feeding on a variety of insects it catches in the air or picks off leaves and branches. It is an agile hunter, constantly on the move, flitting and gliding as it pursues its next meal.

A Vocal Announcer

The Lesser Kiskadee is not shy about announcing its presence. Its call is a distinctive, buzzing “kiskadee,” a sharp two-toned whistle it repeats frequently. This vocalization, along with its colorful plumage and riverside habits, makes it an easily identifiable bird for birdwatchers.

A Charming Resident

The Lesser Kiskadee is a non-migratory bird, meaning you can observe it year-round in the lowlands of Costa Rica. It is a common resident, and its cheerful presence adds a touch of vitality to wetland ecosystems.

So, if you find yourself exploring the lowland regions of Costa Rica, keep an eye out for this energetic splash of color. The Lesser Kiskadee might just become your favorite feathered companion on your Costa Rican adventure!
