Dancing with the Night: The Common Nighthawk

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / Dancing with the Night: The Common Nighthawk

As the last rays of the Costa Rican sun dip below the mountains, a symphony of crickets fills the air. This signals the start of the night shift for a fascinating aerial predator – the Common Nighthawk. Here at our mountain retreat, nestled amidst the whispering pines, these acrobatic birds are a common sight against the twilight canvas.

The Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) is a medium-sized, insectivorous wonder. Their cryptic plumage – a beautiful mix of grays, browns, and blacks with intricate patterns – makes them nearly invisible while perched on a branch during the day. But come nightfall, they take to the skies, transforming into mesmerizing dancers.

A Master of the Night Sky

Their flight is unlike any other bird. Imagine a giant boomerang, its wings held in a shallow V-shape, punctuated by bursts of rapid flaps followed by graceful glides. This erratic, acrobatic style allows them to maneuver swiftly, snatching flying insects mid-air with their wide, frog-like mouths.

Look for them skimming the treetops or soaring high above, their dark forms outlined against the twilight sky. Their large eyes, positioned forward on their heads, give them exceptional night vision, perfect for hunting even the tiniest of flying prey.

A Song in the Darkness

While their sight is impressive, their calls are equally captivating. The males have a unique, buzzy trill that they project during their aerial displays. It’s a sound that’s both otherworldly and strangely beautiful, adding another layer of magic to the night.

A Globetrotter with Local Ties

The Common Nighthawk is a phenomenal traveler. These birds breed across North America, migrating south to spend their winters in Central and South America. Here in Costa Rica, a subspecies – the C. m. panamensis – finds a haven in the mountains and along the Pacific slopes.

Spotting these Night Flyers

While they may not be brightly colored songbirds, the Common Nighthawk offers a different kind of birding experience. Head out to our open-air deck as dusk settles, listen for their calls, and watch for their distinctive silhouette against the darkening sky. You might even see them attracted to the lights around the retreat, putting on an aerial show as they snatch insects.

A Reminder of the Night’s Beauty

The Common Nighthawk is a testament to the wonders that unfold after dark. Their presence reminds us to slow down, appreciate the changing light, and listen to the nocturnal symphony that surrounds us. So, the next time you find yourself at our mountain retreat, keep your eyes peeled for these masters of the night sky. They might just be the highlight of your stargazing experience.
