A Tiny Treasure: The Pearl Kite of Costa Rica’s Mountains

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Tiny Treasure: The Pearl Kite of Costa Rica’s Mountains

Here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, we take pride in being surrounded by not just breathtaking landscapes, but by a vibrant tapestry of life. Today, we turn our gaze to a feathered friend that might be easy to miss due to its size, but that packs a punch in the beauty department: the Pearl Kite.

The Pearl Kite (Gampsonyx swainsonii) is a true raptor mini-me. Even smaller than a kestrel, this little hunter is a recent addition to Costa Rica’s avian community. First spotted in the mid-1990s, it’s now considered fairly common along the Pacific slope, particularly at lower elevations up to 1000 meters. So, keep your eyes peeled as you explore the lush greenery around our mountain retreat – you might just catch a glimpse of this pearl!

While small in stature, the Pearl Kite boasts a plumage that belies its name. Its back is a cool, steely gray, contrasting beautifully with its bright white underparts. Look for a touch of warmth on its forehead and cheeks, a soft buff color that adds a delicate touch. And don’t forget the rusty flanks, adding a hint of earthiness to the overall palette.

This solitary bird is a creature of open spaces. You might spot it perched on a telephone wire, scanning the landscape for its next meal. A keen hunter, the Pearl Kite feeds on insects, lizards, and even small mammals. Its sharp eyes and agile flight make it a formidable predator in its microcosm.

While not as flashy as some of its larger raptor cousins, the Pearl Kite embodies the beauty of Costa Rica’s biodiversity. Its presence in our mountain retreat is a testament to the variety of habitats that thrive within our borders.

Tips for spotting the Pearl Kite:

  • Keep an eye out in open areas, like pastures, fields, and forest edges.
  • Look for a small raptor perched on exposed branches or wires.
  • Pay attention to its size – smaller than a kestrel, with a distinct gray back and white underparts.
  • Patience is key! These little hunters can be elusive, so take your time birding and enjoy the surrounding beauty.

Birdwatching at our Mountain Retreat:

Our mountain retreat is a haven for bird enthusiasts. With diverse habitats ranging from lush rainforests to open meadows, we offer excellent opportunities to see a wide variety of avian life.

In addition to the Pearl Kite, you might encounter toucans with their vibrant beaks, the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, or the melodic song of the Clay-colored Thrush.

We encourage you to bring your binoculars and field guides, or simply relax and let the symphony of birdsong wash over you. Our knowledgeable staff can also help you identify the feathered wonders you encounter during your stay.

So, come experience the magic of Costa Rica’s mountains, and see if you can catch a glimpse of the tiny treasure – the Pearl Kite.
