High in the canopy, a flash of olive green catches your eye. It darts between leaves, a tiny acrobat flitting through the branches. This is the Mistletoe Tyrannulet, a common sight for those staying at our mountain retreat in Costa Rica. Though small, this sprightly songbird packs a punch of personality!
A Bird by Many Names
The Mistletoe Tyrannulet (Zimmerius parvus) is also sometimes called the Paltry Tyrannulet, a name reflecting its diminutive size. This species was once considered part of the larger group including the Guatemalan Tyrannulet, but taxonomic revisions have given it its own well-deserved distinction.
A Description of Delights
Measuring just 11-12 cm long, the Mistletoe Tyrannulet is a true featherweight. Adults boast a slate-colored cap that contrasts beautifully with their bright white eyebrow, giving them a perpetually surprised expression. Their olive-green back provides excellent camouflage amidst the leaves, while their wings are a marvel of subtle details. Look closely and you’ll see bright yellow edges lining the feathers, adding a touch of sunshine to their plumage.
Habitat Haven
Our mountain retreat provides the perfect habitat for the Mistletoe Tyrannulet. They favor humid evergreen forests and edges, second-growth woodlands, and even cultivated areas with large trees. These little birds are fairly common throughout their range, which stretches from eastern Guatemala and Belize south to the northwestern tip of Colombia.
A Life in the Leaves
Mistletoe Tyrannulets are typically seen as solitary birds or in pairs. They spend most of their time perched horizontally on branches in the middle and upper levels of the forest. Their tails are often held at a slight cock, adding to their alert posture.
When it comes to food, the Mistletoe Tyrannulet is a bit of a berry enthusiast. They flit from branch to branch, snatching up small fruits and insects for their meals. Their sharp eyesight and agility make them adept hunters, always on the lookout for their next tasty morsel.
A Sight to Savour
While not the most vibrantly colored bird, the Mistletoe Tyrannulet offers a delightful charm. Their small size and energetic movements make them a joy to watch. If you keep your eyes peeled during your stay at our retreat, you might just catch a glimpse of this resident flitting through the trees. And remember, even the smallest creatures can add a touch of magic to the Costa Rican rainforest experience.
