Here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, we take pride in the symphony of nature that surrounds us. From the booming calls of the resplendent quetzal to the melodic whistles of the collared aracari, our haven is a haven for birdlife. Today, we turn our binoculars to a resident who might be easy to miss due to its size, but whose resilience and beauty are undeniable – the Volcano Hummingbird.
A Jewel of the High Peaks
This aptly named hummingbird is a true Costa Rican gem. Found only in the Talamanca Mountains that cradle our retreat, the Volcano Hummingbird thrives in the thin air, at elevations reaching a staggering 11,000 feet. No bigger than a human thumb, it flits amongst the high-altitude flowers, a splash of color against the rugged mountain backdrop.
Distinctive Features, Divided Duties
The male Volcano Hummingbird is a sight to behold. His throat – called a gorget – shimmers with an iridescent sheen, ranging from steely grayish-purple to a vibrant magenta depending on the light. This dazzling display is a crucial part of his mating strategy, as he seeks to impress females during the breeding season.
Females, on the other hand, lack the flashy gorget. They bear a resemblance to the Scintillant Hummingbird, but can be distinguished by their darker central tail feathers. After mating, the male takes off for lower, warmer climes, leaving the female with the vital task of building the nest and raising the young, a testament to the strength and independence of these tiny birds.
Fueling a Feathery Furnace
Despite their diminutive size, Volcano Hummingbirds have a surprisingly large appetite. To maintain their frenetic activity and body heat in the cool mountain air, they consume a staggering 12,000 calories a day! This translates to visiting countless flowers, sipping nectar, and acting as unwitting pollinators for the high-altitude flora.
Their specialized, short, straight bills are perfectly adapted to extracting nectar from the bell-shaped flowers that dominate their habitat. This constant feeding frenzy creates a fascinating synergy – the hummingbird thrives on the nectar, while the plants benefit from the efficient pollination.

The Volcano Hummingbird is a remarkable creature, perfectly adapted to its challenging environment. Their high-altitude lifestyle, dazzling colors, and vital role in the ecosystem make them a true marvel of the Costa Rican mountains.
