A Tiny Dynamo with a Spiky Crown: The White-Crested Coquette

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Tiny Dynamo with a Spiky Crown: The White-Crested Coquette

Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we share our haven with a dazzling array of avian visitors. Today, we turn our gaze to a hummingbird that’s as energetic as it is elegant – the White-crested Coquette (Lophornis adorabilis), a resident gracing the Pacific slopes of our country.

A Jewel with a Punk Rock Attitude

Imagine a hummingbird with a spiky white crest that wouldn’t look out of place on a punk rocker. That’s the White-crested Coquette for you! This tiny dynamo is a sight to behold. The males, adorned with their namesake crest, are unmistakable. Their feathers boast a rich, dark green sheen that extends from their head down their back, creating a stunning contrast with their white chest and rufous belly. A flash of white across their rump adds another layer of intrigue to their plumage.

The females, while lacking the spectacular crest, are no less beautiful. They share similar body colors with the males, but their crown feathers are a more subdued green. However, one key feature helps differentiate them from their close relative, the Black-Crested Coquette: a vibrant rufous belly.

A Life on the Move

These little fireballs are always on the go. Their wings beat at an incredible pace, allowing them to hover mid-air as they sip nectar from flowers. They frequent the lower and middle levels of forests and their edges, but sightings are not limited to the wild. These adaptable birds can even be spotted flitting around gardens, attracted to vibrantly colored, nectar-rich flowers.

White-crested Coquettes are typically solitary, but they can occasionally be seen gathering around particularly bountiful flowering shrubs, creating a flurry of iridescent wings and dazzling colors.

Tiny but Mighty

Despite their diminutive size – they’re only about 7 cm (2.8 inches) long and weigh a mere 2.7 grams (0.095 ounces) – White-crested Coquettes play a vital role in the ecosystem. As they flit from flower to flower, they act as pollinators, ensuring the continued health and reproduction of various plant species.

A Sight to Treasure

While not the most common hummingbird in Costa Rica, the White-crested Coquette is a true gem to encounter. If you’re lucky enough to spot one during your stay at our retreat, take a moment to appreciate this tiny ball of energy with its spiky crown and vibrant colors. Remember, keeping your hummingbird feeders filled with nectar can attract these dazzling creatures, allowing you a closer look at their frenetic dance among the flowers.

Listen for the Buzz

While their visual appeal is undeniable, the White-crested Coquette also possesses a unique vocalization. Their call is a high-pitched, buzzing sound, often described as a “trill” or a “rattle.” Keep your ears tuned as you explore the trails around our retreat; you might just hear this telltale sign before you catch a glimpse of this magnificent hummingbird.

So, the next time you’re here at our Costa Rican haven, keep your eyes peeled for the White-crested Coquette. With a little patience and a sprinkle of luck, you might just encounter this dazzling denizen of the Costa Rican rainforests.
