Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the verdant mountains, nature’s wonders unfold every day. Today, we turn our focus to a rather shy but undeniably handsome resident – the White-eared Ground-Sparrow (Melozone leucotis).
This sparrow isn’t your average feathered friend. Unlike its Central American cousins that flit through the trees, the White-eared Ground-Sparrow prefers to dwell on or near the forest floor. While you might not spot them perched on high branches, their presence graces the shady understory of the foothills and highlands, ranging from southern Mexico and Guatemala all the way down to northern Costa Rica.
A Looker on the Lower Levels
The White-eared Ground-Sparrow is a large sparrow, boasting a striking appearance. Their head is a masterpiece of contrasting colors. Imagine bold white patches adorning their face, a stark contrast to the dark brown crown. A vibrant splash of yellow graces their necks, adding another layer of intrigue. Their overall body plumage leans towards a rich brown, creating a visually arresting combination. Keep in mind that there are subtle variations depending on location. Populations found further south, in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, tend to have more black on their faces and breasts.
A Creature of Quiet Charm
While undeniably beautiful, the White-eared Ground-Sparrow is a rather timid bird. They often stay hidden in the shady undergrowth, flitting amongst the foliage on the forest floor. Spotting them can require a keen eye and a patient approach. If you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse, you’ll likely see them in pairs, adding to their quiet charm.
Keeping an Ear Out
While patience is key to visually encountering the White-eared Ground-Sparrow, their presence can also be detected through their melodious song. Listen for a series of clear, whistled notes, often described as “whee-chur” or “whee-tee-doo.” These vocalizations, particularly during the breeding season, can help you pinpoint their location within the dense foliage.
A Haven for Birdwatchers
Our Costa Rican retreat provides the perfect sanctuary to encounter this and a plethora of other fascinating birds. With its diverse habitats and lush vegetation, our mountain location is a haven for birdwatchers. So, keep your eyes peeled (and ears tuned) as you explore the trails, for you might just be lucky enough to stumble upon a White-eared Ground-Sparrow, a jewel hidden amongst the leaves.
