A Sparkling Jewel in the Highlands: The White-bellied Mountain-gem

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Sparkling Jewel in the Highlands: The White-bellied Mountain-gem

As you venture deeper into the heart of Costa Rica’s mountains, the emerald embrace of the rainforest gives way to cooler, crisper air and a different kind of avian magic. Here, flitting amongst the flowers and chasing the nectar of cloud forest blooms, you might encounter a dazzling sight: the White-bellied Mountain-gem.

A Flash of Emerald and Amethyst

This medium-sized hummingbird is a true gem of the highlands. The male White-bellied Mountain-gem is a vision of shimmering emerald green above, with a mesmerizing splash of amethyst adorning its throat. A thin white line behind the eye adds a touch of elegance, and the pièce de résistance – a bright, white belly – lives up to the bird’s name.

The female, though not quite as flamboyant, is no less captivating. She shares the same striking white belly and eye line, but her throat is adorned with a pattern of delicate green speckles, offering a subtle contrast to the male’s vibrant plumage.

A Forest Dweller with a Garden Flair

While primarily a creature of the mountain forests, the White-bellied Mountain-gem is not averse to venturing out to the edges, where it can be spotted flitting between flowering shrubs and trees. This makes it a delightful visitor to the gardens and balconies of our Costa Rican mountain retreat.

A Life on the Wing

Like all hummingbirds, the White-bellied Mountain-gem is a marvel of aerial acrobatics. Its wings beat at an astonishing rate, allowing it to hover mid-air as it probes the depths of flowers with its long, slender bill. This rapid wingbeat also creates a characteristic humming sound, a delightful serenade that adds to the magic of encountering this little wonder.

A Feast for the Senses

If you’re fortunate enough to spot a White-bellied Mountain-gem during your stay at our mountain retreat, take a moment to appreciate its dazzling beauty. Watch its mesmerizing aerial dance, listen to the soft hum of its wings, and marvel at the sheer wonder of this tiny jewel that flits through the mountain air.

Keep an Eye Out!

The White-bellied Mountain-gem is a resident bird in Costa Rica, meaning you can spot it year-round. Keep your eyes peeled as you explore the trails around our retreat, or simply relax on your balcony and watch it flit between the flowers. With a little patience and a sprinkle of luck, you might just encounter this dazzling gem of the Costa Rican highlands.
