Here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, we encourage you to embrace the symphony of life surrounding you. While the vibrant toucans and melodic wrens might steal the show, there are hidden musicians in our orchestra of nature. Today, we turn our ears (and eyes) to the secretive Rufous-necked Wood-Rail, a resident of the coastal mangroves.
A Flash of Rust in the Green Labyrinth
The Rufous-necked Wood-Rail is a medium-sized bird, clocking in at around 29-33 cm (11-13 inches) long. If you’re lucky enough to spot one, you’ll be charmed by its contrasting colors. Its namesake feature, the rufous-brown head, neck, and breast, pops against the olive-brown to greenish-olive back. A surprising splash of grey graces the nape and upper back, adding another layer of intrigue.
Masters of Camouflage
But seeing a Rufous-necked Wood-Rail is no easy feat. These birds are masters of camouflage, preferring the dense undergrowth and tangled roots of the mangrove forests. Their long, yellow-green bills and red legs provide the only flashes of color against the murky backdrop. Their secretive nature makes them primarily heard, rather than seen. Listen for their loud, piercing calls that echo through the mangroves – a series of high-pitched “kee-ow” or “kowk-kowk” sounds.
A Life Among the Mangroves
The Rufous-necked Wood-Rail is an insectivore, meticulously foraging for insects, crustaceans, and small vertebrates along the forest floor. Their long, strong legs allow them to navigate the uneven terrain with ease, while their sharp bills probe the leaf litter and mud for hidden treats. They are territorial birds, and you might even hear them engaged in raucous chases to defend their space.
Not Quite Central Valley
Unfortunately, for those staying at our mountain retreat, the Rufous-necked Wood-Rail is unlikely to be spotted on our grounds. Their preferred habitat lies in the coastal mangrove forests, away from the mountainous terrain. But fret not, birding enthusiasts! Costa Rica boasts a diverse range of microclimates, and a trip to the coast could add this fascinating bird to your life list.
Witnessing the Symphony
While the Rufous-necked Wood-Rail might be shy, its presence adds another layer of richness to Costa Rica’s vibrant tapestry of life. So, the next time you explore the coastal mangroves, keep your ears peeled for their calls and your eyes sharp. With a bit of patience, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this rusty wonder flitting through the green labyrinth.
