A Shorebird Surprise: The Surfbird in Costa Rica’s Mountain Retreat?

High in the misty mountains of Costa Rica, our secluded retreat offers tranquility and immersion in the rainforest’s rich biodiversity. But while you might expect to find only toucans and trogons serenading your morning yoga session, a special visitor graces our shores – the aptly named Surfbird.

Yes, you read that right! Though Costa Rica’s heart lies in its lush rainforests, the country boasts a diverse coastline, and with it, some unexpected avian guests. The Surfbird, a long-distance migrant breeding in Alaska and wintering as far south as Chile, makes Costa Rica a stopover on its incredible journey.

A Master of the Rocks

Imagine a stocky shorebird, perfectly adapted to a life on the edge. The Surfbird’s short, blunt bill with an orangey base is ideal for probing crevices in rocky shores, its preferred habitat. Unlike many shorebirds that frequent sandy beaches, the Surfbird thrives amidst the crashing waves and spray of exposed coasts.

While here, you might catch a glimpse of these grey-bodied birds with white bellies flitting amongst the rocks during low tide. Look for their short, dull yellow legs and, in breeding plumage, patches of rusty brown on their backs and darker spotting on their underparts.

A Glimpse of the Arctic

Spotting a Surfbird in our mountain retreat is a delightful surprise. Their presence here speaks to the incredible distances birds travel and the hidden gems Costa Rica offers beyond the rainforest. With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might just see these birds from the Arctic feeding on mollusks, barnacles, and insects exposed by the receding tide.

Enhancing Your Birding Experience

While sightings can’t be guaranteed, our staff can guide you to areas frequented by shorebirds during migration seasons. We can also connect you with local birding experts who can equip you with the knowledge to maximize your chances of seeing this special visitor.

So, as you immerse yourself in the mountain retreat’s tranquility, keep an eye out for the Surfbird – a reminder of the interconnectedness of our planet and the wonders that Costa Rica holds, even in the most unexpected places.
