A Regal Resident: The White-ringed Flycatcher

Soak in the symphony of the rainforest at our Costa Rican retreat. Today, we turn our binoculars to a true aristocrat of the canopy, the White-ringed Flycatcher (Conopias albovittatus). This stunning bird, with its bold markings and impressive perch, is sure to catch your eye (and ear) during your stay.

A King Amongst Flycatchers

While several flycatchers grace Costa Rica’s skies, the White-ringed stands out for its elegance. Imagine a medium-sized bird, a splash of bright yellow below contrasting with a crisp black-and-white head pattern. The key feature, as the name suggests, is the white “ring” – actually a broad white eyebrow that wraps around the entire back of the head, forming a regal diadem.

Spotting a Crowned Gem

Keep your eyes peeled for the White-ringed Flycatcher high up in the forest canopy. Unlike its close relatives, the Social Flycatcher or Great Kiskadee, this bird prefers the leafy heights, perching on the very tops of tall trees. It might even remind you of a pseudo-cotinga with its refined tastes for the treetop realm.

The Tell-Tale Traits

While the white crown is a giveaway, there’s more to this flycatcher’s identification. Look for a noticeably long and thin bill – slenderer than the Great Kiskadee’s but longer than the Social Flycatcher’s. The cheeks are a stark black, not a hint of gray, and the wings are a drab brown, lacking any rufous tones.

A Master of the Hunt

A true insectivore, the White-ringed Flycatcher patiently observes its domain from its high perch. With its keen eyesight, it spots a flitting insect and takes flight in a flash of yellow. Its sharp bill expertly snatches the prey mid-air, a testament to its impressive hunting skills.

Habitat Haven

The White-ringed Flycatcher is a resident of the subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests of Costa Rica. It can also be found in heavily degraded former forests, a testament to its adaptability. So, if you’re exploring the lush rainforests surrounding our retreat, keep an eye out for this magnificent bird.

A Sight (and Sound) to Remember

The White-ringed Flycatcher is not just a visual treat. Listen for its vocalizations – a series of sharp, whistled notes that add to the rich soundscape of the Costa Rican rainforest.
