A Shining Gem
The Great Jacamar is the largest member of its family in Costa Rica. At about 30 centimeters long, it’s almost the size of a robin. Its most striking feature is its iridescent green plumage, which shines like a jewel under the dappled light filtering through the leaves. This bright green covers its back, wings, and crown, allowing it to blend perfectly with the rainforest foliage.
A Touch of Orange and a Bicolored Beak
To add a touch of vibrancy, the Great Jacamar sports a rusty orange belly, a fiery contrast to its emerald upper parts. The short, thick beak is another distinctive feature. Unlike most jacamars with long, slender beaks, the Great Jacamar’s is robust and black, resembling a miniature crow’s beak. Interestingly, there is a subtle coloration difference between males and females. Males have an entirely green throat, while females sport a touch of orange on the throat, reflecting their belly.
A Secret Perch
The Great Jacamar is an uncommon bird, even in the dense jungles that house it. These birds prefer the solitude of the mid to upper canopy, rarely venturing to the forest floor. Their preferred perches are often exposed branches, from where they can watch their territory for prey. Patient observers might be rewarded with a glimpse of the Great Jacamar darting to catch a flying insect, its thick beak snapping shut with impressive speed.
A Nest Built on Borrowed Time
The nesting habits of the Great Jacamar are quite fascinating. Instead of building their own nest, these birds rely on the ingenuity of termites. They excavate a chamber within an existing arboreal termite mound, creating a safe haven for their clutch of one to four white eggs. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks after hatching.
