A Jewel in the Mountains: The Enchanting Canivet’s Emerald

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Jewel in the Mountains: The Enchanting Canivet’s Emerald

Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst the emerald embrace of the mountains, we’re fortunate to share our haven with a dazzling array of avian visitors. Today, we turn our gaze to a tiny wonder – the Canivet’s emerald, a hummingbird that lives up to its name in every way.

A Flash of Green:

The male Canivet’s emerald is a breathtaking sight. Sunlight dances off his iridescent plumage, transforming him into a living jewel. His crown shimmers with a golden-green sheen that cascades down his back, while his underparts are a blaze of even more vibrant emerald green. A long, forked tail adds a touch of elegance, its black feathers edged with a subtle blue gloss.

Females, though lacking the male’s flamboyant crown, are no less captivating. Their plumage is a symphony of greens, with a touch of white on their bellies. Both sexes have a short, straight bill, perfectly adapted for sipping nectar from the heart of flowers.

A Life on the Wing:

Canivet’s emeralds are found throughout Costa Rica, from the dry forests of the Pacific coast to the lush rainforests on the Caribbean side. They favor forest edges and semi-open areas, making them frequent visitors to our mountain retreat.

These little dynamos are masters of hovering, their wings beating so fast they become virtually invisible. Their constant movement can make them challenging to spot, but keep an eye out for a flash of green flitting amongst the flowers, particularly at the lower levels of the forest.

A Tail-Tell Sign:

One of the most distinctive features of the Canivet’s emerald is its tail-wagging behavior. Unlike most hummingbirds, they don’t just hover; they also pump their tails rapidly while suspended in mid-air. This unique habit is thought to help them stabilize their bodies and may even serve as a form of communication.

A Jewel to Treasure:

The Canivet’s emerald is a vital part of the Costa Rican ecosystem, pollinating flowers and ensuring the health of the rainforest. Their tiny bodies hold immense beauty and energy, a constant reminder of the wonders that surround us.

So, the next time you’re relaxing on your balcony at our retreat, keep an eye out for this dazzling hummingbird. With a little patience, you might just be rewarded with a glimpse of this emerald jewel flitting through the mountain air.
