A Jewel in the Highlands: The Dazzling Mexican Violetear

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Jewel in the Highlands: The Dazzling Mexican Violetear

Even among the vibrant tapestry of birds Costa Rica boasts, the Mexican Violetear (Colibri thalassinus) stands out as a dazzling jewel. This medium-sized hummingbird isn’t just about its impressive wing speed and aerial acrobatics. Its plumage is a mesmerizing combination of shimmering emerald green and captivating violet accents, making it a true sight to behold.

While not endemic to Costa Rica, the Violetear finds a comfortable home in the highlands, particularly in the pine-oak forests and their edges. Here, at our mountain retreat nestled amidst these very forests, you’ll have a fantastic chance to spot this little wonder.

A Flash of Green and Violet

The Violetear’s brilliance lies in its contrasting colors. Its entire upper body, from head to tail, shimmers with an almost metallic emerald green. This is accentuated by a broad, dark band across the tip of its tail, adding a touch of definition. But the true stars of the show are the Violetear’s namesake features – the violet patches.

These patches adorn the sides of the bird’s neck, just behind the head, and appear to glitter in the sunlight. The effect is mesmerizing, as if a tiny amethyst has been embedded on each side. The throat and chest continue the theme of green, but with a more subtle and glistening quality compared to the vibrant upper body. The belly rounds out the color scheme with a bright, shining green.

A Songster in the Trees

The Violetear isn’t just a visual treat; it’s also an accomplished singer. While flitting amongst flowers or perched on an exposed twig high in a tree, it delivers its song with tireless enthusiasm. This song is a series of jerky, metallic chips, and while not particularly melodious, it has a certain charm and adds to the overall vibrancy the Violetear brings to the forest.

Finding Your Feathered Friend

The Violetear is most commonly spotted in overgrown clearings and along roadsides with dense flower banks. These areas provide them with both the cover they prefer and the nectar-rich flowers they rely on for sustenance.

Keeping an Eye Out

Given their preference for staying hidden within flowers while feeding, spotting a Violetear can take some patience. However, their bright colors and persistent singing make them easier to locate once you know what to look and listen for.

Here are some tips for observing these dazzling hummers:

  • Early mornings and late afternoons are prime times to see them flitting between flowers.
  • Listen for their song. The jerky, metallic chips are a giveaway to their presence.
  • Look for flashes of green amidst the flowers, particularly in areas with plenty of blooms.
  • Bring binoculars for a closer look at their stunning plumage.

With a little patience and these tips in hand, you’ll be well on your way to witnessing the magic of the Mexican Violetear. And what better place to do so than from the tranquility of our mountain retreat, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Costa Rica’s highlands? We look forward to welcoming you and helping you discover the wonders of the Violetear and the countless other avian gems our country has to offer.
