While the rainforests of Costa Rica teem with resident birds, we also have the privilege of witnessing incredible feathered travelers. One such visitor is the Pacific Golden-Plover, a dazzling shorebird that graces our skies during its epic migrations.
A Flash of Gold Across the Mountains
Imagine this: you’re practicing yoga on our mountaintop deck, the crisp morning air invigorating your senses. Suddenly, a flock of birds streaks across the clear blue canvas above, their wings flashing with an unexpected glimmer of gold. That, my friends, is the Pacific Golden-Plover in all its glory.
A Master of Long Distances
These medium-sized shorebirds breed in the far reaches of Alaska and Siberia. But come winter, they embark on incredible journeys, flying over vast stretches of the Pacific Ocean to reach their wintering grounds. Costa Rica, with its diverse habitats, is a favored destination for these long-distance champions.
Spotting a Golden Gem
While you might not find them in the rainforest itself, Pacific Golden-Plovers frequent pastures, playing fields, and even golf courses during their stay. Look for a bird with a slender build, a short bill, and most strikingly, plumage that lives up to its name.
- Breeding Season Elegance: During the breeding season, the Pacific Golden-Plover dons a truly spectacular outfit. Its back is a mesmerizing tapestry of gold, black, and white speckles. The face and underparts are a bold black, contrasting with a crisp white stripe that runs down the side of the neck and flanks.
- Winter Wear: After breeding, their plumage becomes more subdued. The gold tones become duller, and the black and white markings soften. However, their slender build and graceful movements remain giveaways.
A Feast for the Senses
Pacific Golden-Plovers are a delight to observe. They forage by running and stopping abruptly, probing the ground with their bills for insects and worms. Their calls are a mellow series of whistles and toots, adding to the serenity of the mountain environment.
A Transient Treasure
The Pacific Golden-Plover graces us with its presence from September to April. So, if you’re planning a mountain retreat during these months, keep your eyes peeled for these fleeting flashes of gold. They are a beautiful reminder of the interconnectedness of the natural world, a world where even the most remote mountains can be a stopover on a grand global adventure.
Beyond the Mountains
While the Pacific Golden-Plover might not be a permanent resident of our mountain retreat, Costa Rica offers a haven for many other bird species throughout the year. Stay tuned for our upcoming blog posts where we’ll explore the resident and migratory feathered wonders that grace our rainforests, beaches, and skies.
