Here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, we take pride in the symphony of nature that surrounds us. From the booming calls of the Resplendent Quetzal to the melodic whistles of the Collared Aracari, our haven is teeming with avian wonders. Today, we turn our focus to a dazzling jewel that graces our mountain forests – the White-throated Mountaingem.
A Flash of Emerald and White
The White-throated Mountaingem (Lampornis castaneoventris) is a hummingbird endemic to the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. This medium-sized gem flits through the mountain air, a flash of emerald green with striking markings.
The males are the true stars of the show. Their bodies shimmer with iridescent green feathers, while their throats boast a bold patch of white, earning them their namesake. A thin white line extends behind their eyes, adding a touch of elegance. But the crown jewel, quite literally, is their head. In the eastern parts of their range, the mountaingem boasts a dazzling blue crown, while their western counterparts sport a cooler gray.
The Fairer Sex
The females, while not as vibrantly colored, are no less beautiful. Their underparts are a warm, buffy color, contrasting beautifully with a black cheek patch. They retain the tell-tale white line behind the eye, a helpful feature for birders distinguishing them from their close relative, the Purple-throated Mountaingem. However, a good look at the tail feathers is key for definitive identification. The White-throated Mountaingem has a duller, bronzy tail compared to the purple-throated variety.
A Forest Dweller with a Sweet Tooth
These hummingbirds are primarily at home in the mountain forests, flitting amongst the flowers and trees. They readily venture to forest edges and gardens, making them a delightful visitor to our retreat grounds. Keen observers might even spot them at feeders, their long, slender bills perfectly adapted for sipping nectar from flowering plants.
A Treasure to Behold
The White-throated Mountaingem is a true gem of the Costa Rican highlands. With their dazzling plumage and energetic flitting, they add a touch of magic to our mountain paradise. Whether you’re an avid birder or simply appreciate the beauty of nature, keep an eye out for these emerald jewels on your next visit to our mountain retreat. With a little patience and a keen eye, you might just be rewarded with a glimpse of this magnificent hummingbird!
