A Flash of Violet: Unveiling the Majesty of the Violet Sabrewing

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Flash of Violet: Unveiling the Majesty of the Violet Sabrewing

Here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, mornings erupt in a symphony of buzzing wings and vibrant feathers. Among the dazzling cast of characters flitting through the flowers, the Violet Sabrewing takes center stage, a dazzling jewel come to life.

The Violet Sabrewing, aptly named for its breathtaking plumage, is the largest hummingbird gracing the skies of Mexico and Central America. With a length of 13-15 cm (5.1-5.9 in) and a weight of 9-12 g (0.32-0.42 oz), it boasts an impressive presence. But size is just the beginning of this wonder’s charm.

A Tale of Two Plumages

The Violet Sabrewing is a study in sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females sport distinct appearances. Gentlemen of the species are a sight to behold. Their bodies shimmer with a metallic violet-blue sheen, particularly dazzling on the underparts and nape. This brilliance takes on an almost bluish cast on the belly, creating a mesmerizing contrast. Their crown is a dusky affair, often glossed with a subtle blue-green, adding depth to their overall look.

Females, while lacking the male’s flamboyant violet, are no less beautiful. They are adorned in a captivating blend of greens and blacks. Their upperparts are typically a rich, metallic green, while their underparts lean towards a more olive green. Both sexes share a distinctive black bill, though subspecies may have variations in length.

A Tailored for Flight

The Violet Sabrewing’s tail is as remarkable as its plumage. The central feathers boast a bluish-green or bluish-black hue, while the outer ones are a striking black adorned with wide white tips. This combination provides exceptional maneuverability, allowing for the acrobatic aerial displays these hummingbirds are famous for.

A Master of the Hover

With their powerful wings beating at an astounding 80 times per second, Violet Sabrewings achieve a remarkable feat – hovering. This ability allows them to meticulously sip nectar from flowers, acting as vital pollinators in the process. Their long, slightly curved bills are perfectly adapted for reaching deep into blossoms, ensuring efficient nectar extraction.

Finding the Violet Sabrewing

While you might be lucky enough to spot a Violet Sabrewing from our mountain retreat, their range extends throughout southern Mexico, Central America, and even reaches northern parts of South America. They favor open areas with scattered trees, forest edges, and gardens, making them frequent visitors to flowering shrubs and trees.

A Jewel in the Cloud Forest

If you’re specifically seeking to witness the splendor of the Violet Sabrewing, consider venturing deeper into Costa Rica’s cloud forests. These lush, mystical havens provide the perfect habitat for these magnificent creatures. Here, amidst the emerald embrace of the rainforest, you might just catch a glimpse of a vibrant violet flash, a fleeting glimpse of the captivating Violet Sabrewing.

At our retreat, we strive to create an environment where nature thrives and wonder unfolds. The Violet Sabrewing is a testament to that magic. Keep an eye out on your next visit, and you might just be dazzled by this dazzling jewel of the Costa Rican skies.
