High in the misty canopy of Costa Rica’s mountain forests, a vibrant melody cuts through the emerald stillness. It’s the Yellow-bellied Siskin, a dazzling songbird that injects a burst of sunshine into the cool mountain air. Here at our Costa Rican retreat, nestled amidst these very mountains, these little bundles of joy are frequent visitors, flitting between the trees and offering a delightful show.
The Yellow-bellied Siskin, with its scientific name Spinus xanthogastra, is a small finch belonging to the Fringillidae family. Measuring a mere 4.3 inches, this bird packs a punch in the visual department.
Dressed to Impress
The male Yellow-bellied Siskin is a sight to behold. Imagine a tuxedo, but instead of black and white, it’s black and sunshine yellow. His entire body is clad in sleek black plumage, except for the belly, wing patches, and the base of the tail, which burst forth in a glorious display of golden yellow. This vibrant contrast is truly eye-catching, making him stand out amidst the lush green foliage.
The female Siskin, though less flashy, is no less beautiful. She dons a more subdued outfit of olive green above, transitioning to a pale yellow below, with the same bright yellow wing patches and tail base as the male.
A Life in the Mountains
The Yellow-bellied Siskin is a true mountain dweller, preferring the cool, humid forests and forest edges at elevations between 800 and 3,000 meters. Here at our retreat, located in the heart of these mountains, you’ll find them flitting between the branches of tall trees, particularly near clearings and openings in the canopy.
While they’re not the most social birds, they’re often seen in pairs, flitting from branch to branch in constant communication. Their call is a sharp “pyee,” while the male’s song is a delightful, chattering twitter. It’s a melody that perfectly complements the serenity of the mountain forests.
A Diet Fit for a Finch
These little acrobats are primarily seed eaters. They have a particular fondness for the seeds of alder and dandelion, but their diet also includes insects, especially during the breeding season when protein is essential for raising their young.
Building a Home in the Green Cathedral
The Yellow-bellied Siskin’s nest is a marvel of avian architecture. Crafted from a meticulous assembly of rootlets, bark, and lichen, it takes the form of a shallow cup nestled securely 2.4 to 3.7 meters high in the dense foliage of a small tree. The female typically lays 2-3 green-tinged white eggs, which she incubates for a short period before the chicks hatch.
