Welcome back, birding enthusiasts, to another exciting encounter with the feathered residents of Costa Rica! Today, we venture deep into the emerald embrace of our rainforests to meet a dazzling little gem – the Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher.
A Master of Camouflage (Except for That One Spot)
Standing at a petite 4.7 inches, the Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher is an expert at blending into its surroundings. Its olive-brown head and upper back mimic the forest canopy, while the blackish wings and tail further enhance its invisibility amongst the shadows. But wait, there’s a vibrant surprise! A bright, light yellow rump patch, the bird’s namesake, disrupts the camouflage. This isn’t a mistake though; it’s the Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher’s secret weapon.
The Art of the Flash
The Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher is an active hunter, flitting through the forest understory at eye level. Its keen eyes scan for unsuspecting insects, its sharp psit call a constant melody in the dappled sunlight. But when it spots prey, the flycatcher transforms into a dazzling performer. It will fan its broad tail and droop its wings, creating a spectacular display of sunshine yellow. This flash not only startles the insect but also confuses it momentarily, giving the flycatcher the upper hand in the aerial ambush.
A Social Butterfly (Amongst the Trees)
While the Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher is a skilled solo hunter, it’s also quite the social butterfly (well, more like a rainforest social bird). You’ll often find them participating in mixed-species feeding flocks. Imagine a vibrant tapestry of feathers flitting through the undergrowth, each bird using its unique skills to find a tasty morsel. The Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher, with its sharp vision and dazzling display, undoubtedly adds a touch of sunshine to these lively gatherings.
